Aggressive driving is a very serious and dangerous safety hazard.
Fortunately, it is preventable. Whether you find yourself driving aggressively or you’re a victim of an aggressive driver, there are several ways to alleviate the problem and stop the situation from becoming worse. We’ve compiled a list of techniques in case you find yourself in a tough situation.
Plan ahead
According to The National Road Safety Foundation, one way to alleviate the pressure that can cause road rage is to give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination. Give yourself some extra time in case of traffic or if you need to make a pit stop. Another good idea is to check a traffic website to see if there are traffic jams or accidents on your travel route. If there are, you may be able to take an alternate route, which will save you time and stress. Remember, don’t use a traffic app while you’re driving.
Fill your tank
If you’re making a long trip, fill your tank up the night before. This will cut down on travel time and will alleviate stress.
Keep a cool head
Over the many years you’re likely to drive, it’s inevitable you’ll encounter someone tailgating you, beeping, swerving in and out of your lane, and other aggressive driving behavior to no fault of your own. According to Edmunds, the best way to handle the situation is to keep a cool head. Move over and let them pass. It can be dangerous to be near an aggressive driver. Keep your distance and don’t engage in defensive or confrontational behavior.
