Safety tips: What to do in a blackout

What steps should you take in the case of a power outage?
Excessive and abrupt electricity demand can cause sudden power outages in cities and towns. The more we crank up our air conditioners, the higher the chance that a blackout will occur. Here are some helpful tips in the case you lose power:
Flashlights
Have a few flashlights handy for an emergency. Try to avoid using candles as they can be a fire hazard. Don’t forget to have some extra batteries on hand, too!
Refrigerator
Refrain from opening the refrigerator and freezer doors as much as possible to conserve the cold and preserve your food.
Radio
Keep a radio nearby so you can tune in and listen to the news happening in your area. Make sure you have a radio that runs on batteries, and have extra batteries.
Unplug
Unplug any electrical devices. An abrupt power surge can damage your electronics.
Cell Phone
Conserve your cell phone battery. You may need to use your phone in an emergency. Playing games or surfing the net on your phone can drain its battery life unnecessarily.
Water
Stay cool, and stay hydrated, especially with no AC or fans. The heat can cause dehydration which can increase the risk of heat strokes and other serious problems.
Have fun!
A power outage is a good time to play some board games or chat and catch up with those you live with without all of the distractions. If it’s during the day, get out and go for a walk, run errands or catch a movie someplace that still has electricity (and air conditioning!).
